…and unfortunately missed out on victory. Winner Ando's engine was stock, while runner-up Nishioka used a diagonal-flow turbo; both were below 300 hp. Perhaps this course rewards manageable, moderately powerful setups more than maximum-power tuning.

Alongside expert, beginner and middle classes, there was a twin class. Sudden changes such as ‘We'll judge this corner next’ or ‘The next judging run is in reverse’ made the format fresh and unusual. They also made competitors' abilities easier to assess and kept spectators entertained.

Nishizaki of organizer Tire Club said the standard rises every year and more young drivers are appearing, so this region deserves attention. It also has capable mentors such as Hidaka and Takada. A unified Shikoku championship bringing together strong drivers from the island's prefectures was planned for August.

The expert-class top three earned entry rights. Ehime's drivers should do well: not only their driving, but their energy as people was impressive. We're already looking forward to that championship!

I tried to push the limits of a stock car!

The driving makes a fierce impression too!

His smoke-filled runs were unforgettable. The car uses a Tomei complete engine, TSR350. The interior is as stylish as the engine bay: his wife made the checked door trim!

Shinji Nishioka

Rear tires were Federal SS595s. ‘This was my first time using them, and the grip was stable—they felt good!’ he said happily. He also performed superbly in the twin class and took second. The twin-class winners were Masaki Ando and Hitoshi Ando, who are brothers! The Ando brothers are strong!
