…judging from smoke at traffic lights, the turbo oil seal is probably failing. Oil may be leaking into the exhaust housing and leaving as white smoke. Shaft movement or heat damage can make turbo seals lose their sealing ability. Initially smoke may appear while boost still builds, but later acceleration can produce enough smoke to obscure everything behind. By that stage, boost may also stop building. …push alternately at the top and bottom of the tire to check for play. If it's clearly loose, we recommend replacing it with a new part, since you don't know how a used one was treated. Bearing play can also result from a loose hub-retaining nut.

Early on, tightening may fix it; severe cases warrant replacement. The bearing cannot be bought separately, so order the complete hub. Part number 43210-AA100; price ¥13,700 for one rear side at the time of publication. [Historical answer and price]

Please tell me the gearing for Ebisu South! Question from Tenryu, Fukushima

Q

I drive an AE86. If I match gearing for Ebisu South using only the final drive… [Separate question:] My handbrake doesn't work. Moving the caliper lever moves the piston…

…what ratio is suitable? [Separate question:] After cabin adjustment, pulling the handbrake moves both caliper levers. What's causing the problem?

I used 4.7! Answer: Dropout Racing. It depends on power and tire diameter, but the final…

Hibino

…drive should be 4.5 or 4.7. Perhaps many use 4.5? In my case, 4.7 was just right, probably also because I use high rpm frequently. At D1 round three at Ebisu, I used 195/50-15 tires for solo runs and 185/60-14 for tandem. [Handbrake-answer continuation:] …may be too worn. Check the condition of rotors and pads.

Poor handbrake performance may come from poor pad contact or worn rotors…

The airflow meter on Blitz's ER34 is in a different position… Question from ‘I'm the central babaa,’ Kanagawa

On page 304 of July's issue, Blitz's ER34 has its airflow meter after the intercooler…

…does that offer an advantage? Doesn't it stall when lifting the throttle? I'm curious—please explain. Or does it have no particular significance?

It's called a ‘blow-through’ arrangement!

Abe

Answer: Blitz

Placing the airflow meter after the intercooler…

…in a blow-through arrangement after the intercooler, the effect is opposite to what you suggest: it helps prevent stalling caused by airflow reversing when the throttle is released.

The disadvantage, on the other hand, is that the…

…air is cooled through the intercooler, producing moisture. In winter this can make the airflow meter malfunction or fail…

…that can happen.

The factory ER34 airflow meter is here. The placement shows consideration for maintenance too…

…doesn't it?

With 4.5, the last corner is second gear, then third partway along the straight. With 4.7, he can stay in third from the last corner. That may explain the speed he showed at round three. ‘Turn two may differ too: 4.7 works in second, while with 4.5 you may want first,’ he explained.

Has the hub failed? Question from ‘Silvia fan,’ Shiga

I drive an S15. When turning slowly, the left rear tire…

…the tire feels as though it is wobbling. It's securely fastened; could the hub bearing be bad?

July's FD3S/S15 buying guide said play can develop easily…

…is that it?

…can I buy parts from a Nissan dealer, or are reinforced versions available? Please give prices and details.

Hubs need to be regarded as wear items…

Kazama

Answer: Kazama Auto

S15 hub bearings seem prone to play. With the car raised…

White smoke comes from my exhaust

Question from ‘I love the 180SX’

Oita Prefecture

I drive a 180SX. While waiting at traffic lights, the exhaust produces…

…white smoke appears. Why? Boost still builds properly. The car has an air filter, front pipe, BNR34 factory fuel pump, straight catalytic-converter replacement and ECU. What's wrong?

The turbo may be in trouble!

Terasaki

Answer: GT Works. White exhaust smoke can indicate oil entering through valve seals, piston rings, or turbo-related problems…
