Good-looking cars found at the circuit: capture special! ORC Drift Challenge 2004, July 9, Shiraoi. This installment of ‘Drift Snapshots’ features entrants in the ORC Drift Challenge.
Following ADVAN Drift Meeting and POTENZA Cup with A'PEXi, it offers drivers aiming for the top a major chance to earn D1 GP entry. After last year's event at Nago Circuit in Okinawa, this year gave Hokkaido contest entrants their opportunity. Seventy cars entered.
Unfortunately bad weather turned the judged section into something resembling a dirt course. Here are 23 cars that kept shining as they drove hard through slippery conditions, broken bumpers and mud.
An entrant from Osaka falls in round one! Hideyuki Inoue, 28, Hyogo, Altezza SXE10. Determined to earn D1 entry this year, he shipped the car over two weeks early and did advance practice. With 200 hp and a naturally aspirated engine, a big course seemed difficult, but the wet conditions made us hopeful. Elimination in round one was a surprise; other participants had been watching him closely too.

Autech Version goes wild!
A wolf in sheep's clothing! Takayoshi Miyake, Skyline HCR32. It looks like an ordinary Type M, even retaining factory wine-metallic paint. But under the hood is an RB26DETT with twin GT2535 turbos! Stable driving earned fifth place.

Tomokazu Taoka, Stagea WGNC34. This Stagea is an Autech Version, meaning an RB26DETT and manual transmission! A GT wing suits the wagon surprisingly well. The proudly illuminated headlights must be HIDs. He was eliminated in round one, but putting on such an impactful run in a rare car is excellent.

Did the wet surface help? Masaya Hayasaka, 22, Hokkaido, Corolla FX AE101. His first judged-corner entry was weak, but the hairpin entry had momentum and looked great. Perhaps the wet surface helped him achieve considerable angle. The exhaust also looks homemade, and the checkered flag adds a nice touch.

Age 25, Hokkaido
Full countersteer looks amazing! Hironobu Murakami, Cefiro A31. It's a shame the bumper has come off—perhaps from attacking so aggressively—but that angle has enormous impact! [Middle sentence damaged.] It has striking steering lock; how much has it been increased? He advanced through qualifying into the top 16.
Wataru Takahashi, 29, Hokkaido, Silvia S14
Akira Sugita
Age 24, Hokkaido, Silvia S14. The red body combined with a carbon hood and grille looks tough and racy, with excellent angle too! Many Hokkaido cars seemed to be using GT-R intercoolers.
A green late-model S14 brings Kyushu's Hayashida car to mind. This one combines a T&E front bumper with GP Sports side skirts. The lack of stickers and use of aero mirrors make it simply…
