For a 400 PS target, the GT-RS is recommended. There are many ways to take an SR engine beyond a boost upgrade, which can make the choices confusing. Top Secret recommends exactly 400 PS as the first turbo swap target, chiefly because the original gearbox can still be used. The pump and injectors already need upgrading at the boost increase stage; the next major expense is the transmission. Beyond 400 PS, twin plate clutches become common...

Top Secret's preferred turbo is HKS's GT-RS, which makes around 400 PS at 1.2–1.4 kg/cm² boost. The S15 kit costs ¥207,900. If the fuel system was upgraded during the boost only stage, 400 PS can cost under ¥300,000 including tuning.

Its strength is producing that output with exceptionally sharp response. Trust's T518Z and A'PEXi's AX53B70 are alternatives with similar modern technology and prices, so preference can decide. Top Secret recommends cams and a stainless manifold as well.

This can deliver a full 400 PS with a useful range from around 4,000 to 7,800 rpm. A factory ECU remap works, but V Pro provides finer adjustment and is the shop's preference. If drivetrain upgrades are affordable, the GT3037 Pro S offers good balance for higher output.

Miki's D1 car uses one with HKS cams and 2.2 liter displacement. At standard displacement, roughly 500 PS is possible at 1.4 kg/cm², but an upgraded gearbox is essential and drivetrain loads are substantial. Miki says it is tremendous fun, even on small circuits if high rpm can be maintained.

Low rpm response trails the GT-RS, but its top end excitement is beyond a simple bolt on setup. Top Secret chooses Pro S partly for slightly better throttle response than the external wastegate GT3037...

Top Secret's top recommended turbo

This next generation turbo uses dedicated components developed for power and response. It has a compressor wheel diameter comparable to the GT2835 yet retains strong low rpm punch, offering the best of both. The kit includes an uprated actuator.

...that's the reason.

Fuel system capacity upgrades are compulsory. A GT-R pump and 550 cc injectors are needed from the boost upgrade stage. Replace the fuel pressure regulator when changing the turbo.

The three essential cooling components are a front mount intercooler, radiator and oil cooler. Without the intercooler, intake temperatures become too high to make power. Installing the radiator and oil cooler together is most efficient...
